Reading Comprehension, Part 2

This continuation of the Reading Comprehension series builds on foundational skills and introduces more advanced reading strategies to deepen student engagement with literature. Students will explore feelings and emotional tones as portrayed in excerpts from award-winning and classic books. Emphasis is placed on interpreting character motivation, identifying figurative language, making inferences, and drawing thematic connections.

Readings include selections from:

  • The Adventures of Pinocchio

  • The Harry Potter series

  • Alice in Wonderland

  • Other classic and Newbery Medal-winning literature

Through active reading, students will further develop critical thinking, empathy, and literary appreciation. This is the second course in the two-part Reading Comprehension series.

Course Objective

The objective of Reading Comprehension, Part 2 is to strengthen students’ ability to engage deeply with literary texts by applying advanced reading strategies. Students will focus on identifying emotions, themes, and author techniques in a variety of excerpts from classic and award-winning literature. They will enhance their inferencing skills, recognize figurative language, and make text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections. This course encourages analytical thinking and emotional awareness while fostering a lasting appreciation for literature.
