Reading Comprehension, Part 1

This course is designed to help students build foundational reading comprehension strategies that will serve them across all subjects. Students will explore techniques for active reading—what to do before, during, and after reading—to improve understanding and engagement. Through 30 carefully selected excerpts from classic and contemporary literature, students will explore emotional themes such as happiness, surprise, love, and loneliness.

Featured readings include:

  • Joy in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

  • Loneliness in The Wizard of Oz

  • Surprise in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

  • Love in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer

The course is structured to cultivate a love of reading while teaching critical strategies such as annotation, summarization, prediction, and inference. This is the first course in a two-part Reading Comprehension series.

Course Objective

The objective of Reading Comprehension, Part 1 is to develop students’ ability to understand, interpret, and connect with literature through the use of essential reading strategies. Students will learn how to approach texts thoughtfully before reading, engage actively while reading, and reflect meaningfully after reading. By exploring excerpts from well-known literary works, they will practice identifying emotions, themes, character development, and the author’s purpose. This course nurtures both reading fluency and emotional literacy, equipping students with the tools they need to become confident, independent readers and thinkers.
